November 18 – December 29th, 2013 – FRANKLIN BEAN’S WINNER WONDERLAND

banner party

Emmy Swain and Franklin Bean are celebrating a great year by giving cash prizes in the amount of $25 every Sunday through the end of the year. The weekly winner will choose the charity to receive the $25 on their behalf.

Weeks 1 through 4 – Each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, we will post a question or a fill in the blank about Franklin Bean. The first to answer all three questions correctly is the winner for that week. You can only answer one time per question, so make sure you know you’re correct before posting. Winners and answers will be posted on Sundays.

During this event please share your favorite recipe and holiday decorations. We want your own decorations, because we will be choosing a winner! And don’t be shy, “Like” the one(s) that you think should win.

Week 5 – Judges will be choosing the winning photograph of the best indoor decoration.

Week 6 – Judges will be choosing the winning photograph of the best outdoor decoration.

You have a chance to help your favorite charity, or walk away with a fabulous recipe or decorating idea. Don’t miss it!

November 2nd, 2013 – World Literary Cafe, Author Spotlight

Welcome to the World Literary Cafe Author Spotlight

Featuring: Author Emmy Swain

Interview by Wendy L. Young

Welcome to today’s WLC Author Spotlight! Today we have Emmy Swain here to chat about traveling and writing for children.

First, Emmy, who has inspired you most in your life?

My son has been a great inspiration and questions any self-doubt I may experience. He is a gift!

Children certainly are! I feel the same about my boys.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?

If I had no family, I would travel to several places I have not yet experienced. I’m much less stressed in a small village with access to the water and mountains. If I had to move today, it would be to Mexico. I love the people, the plazas, the music, the art, the food, and the bright handmade crafts. I also love the indigenous peoples of Mexico, their pride and natural way of living. Most importantly, there is a celebration for everything!

Sounds like a very peaceful existence, with plenty of opportunity to write.

What is the first book that you published?  What is your latest?

Meet Franklin Bean was the first book I published. The latest in the series is Franklin Bean and Bubbie’s Bullies.

Your books look like a lot of fun!

Who do you write for? Who is your ideal reader?

I write for myself and for children. Stories are constantly brewing in my head, and further unfold as I’m writing. It is entertaining as well as relaxing for me. My ideal reader is one who enjoys my books and understands the message.

What inspires you to write?

Positive reaction from my readers is a great inspiration. It’s the smiles; or when I get a letter from a child, teacher, parent or grandparent telling me how much they love my book(s).  Receiving handmade cards and bookmarks from children can make my day. It is an unmatched feeling to know I have made a difference in a child’s life, and most definitely an inspiration to continue.

That is so sweet!

Which character is the most fun to write?

Franklin Bean, whose alter ego is Pancho Frijole. Franklin Bean is my Boston Terrier in real life. Many of my stories start from my conversations with him. He makes me laugh and brings me joy, which I share with the world. He is full of surprises both in and out of my series.

I bet kids love reading about his adventures smiley

As a reader, which do you prefer – Kindle – Nook or an old fashioned book paper book in your hands?

I still like an old fashioned paper book, libraries and bookstores.  However, a Kindle or Nook can hold more and is best when traveling.

Portability vs. that unmistakable feel of a book in your hands… I definitely agree on both points!

Do you think you’d be a writer if there were no computers?

Yes. I grab a napkin, notepad or scrap paper when something hits.

Can’t stop that writing bug! The computers make it easier but do not a writer make.

Let’s wrap up with a few quick questions.

Romance or Mystery?  Mystery

Heroes or villains?  Both – a villain makes a hero more heroic

Favorite coffee flavor?  French Vanilla

Favorite place to write?  Overlooking the ocean

Ice cream or brownies?  Warm fudgy brownies

Real life or Fantasy?  Real life often collides with fantasy. I don’t live in a box.

Thank you for stopping by, Emmy. I hope everyone enjoyed the interview.
